Umbilical Cord Stem Cell Banking

Umbilical cord blood is one of the original, non-embryonic sources of stem cells used in regenerative medicine. While the harvesting of umbilical cord blood is not harmful to either baby or mother, it is rarely harvested today within the United States for anything other than cord blood banking immediately after the birth of a child.

There are a number of reasons why, and we’ll explore the main ones. But first, let’s take a look at some umbilical cord blood tissue basics.

The Basics of Umbilical Cord Blood Stem Cells

Though it is called umbilical cord blood, or often simply “cord blood,” the blood is found in both the umbilical cord and placenta after the birth of a baby. Prior to the advancements made in adipose-derived stem cell harvesting and bone marrow aspiration, saving umbilical cord blood was one of the few sources of stem cells available to be sanctioned by the FDA. This is because the harvesting of umbilical cord blood and tissue doesn’t harm either the baby or the mother.

The Basics of Umbilical Cord Blood Stem Cells

Why Umbilical Cord Blood and Tissue Is Not Used By Legitimate U.S. Stem Cell Clinics

First and foremost, cord blood stem cells cannot survive the flash freezing and heavy processing required prior to being sent to a public medical facility. This means that no viable cord blood stem cells ever make it to the patient undergoing therapy. Those patients are being injected with dead cells.

Under these circumstances, umbilical cord blood and tissue cannot even be legitimately called a stem cell product.

In fact, the cells in umbilical cord blood and tissue product are known as “suicide cells.” This is because these cells live for less than 24 hours and HAVE NO REGENERATIVE CAPABILITIES. Yet unscrupulous facilities exist, even in the United States, that claim umbilical cord products of these kinds can produce a “miracle cure.”

The Benefits of Legitimate Stem Cell Therapy

When procedures are done with legitimately viable stem cells and other regenerative materials like platelet-rich plasma, they help the body heal and repair itself. There are three key benefits inherent to viable adipose-derived stem cells and platelet-rich plasma:

  1. They contain cytokines and other anti-inflammatory properties that work to relieve pain and stimulate healing without the negative side effects of steroids and other medications.
  2. Growth factors can help promote stem cell activation and can speed up recovery following surgery or a major injury or illness.
  3. There is also hyaluronic acid, which has been shown in some studies to help lubricate joints, cushion bones, and heals cartilage and other soft tissue that has been damaged.

Every patient is unique, with the symptoms of any given disease or injury presenting as uniquely as the patient. That’s why a thorough consultation with an experienced physician is the first critical step in determining which stem cell type with its therapeutic qualities is the best choice for each person. Because NSI is a full-service regenerative medicine clinic, the physicians and medical staff can take full advantage of the safest viable source of stem cells and apply them to each patient’s precise condition and unique symptoms.

Who’s a Candidate for Therapy With Stem Cells?

Legitimate stem cell therapy performed with truly viable stem cells can help relieve pain and speed up healing following a number of procedures; it is ideal for patients who are suffering from:

  • Osteoarthritis and other joint disorders
  • Soft tissue, ligament, or cartilage damage
  • Achilles tears and strains that are not responding to other therapy
  • Epicondylitis and other related conditions
  • Muscle pulls and strains
  • Nerve pinching and injuries
  • Tears and injuries to any of the body’s tendons or ligaments
  • Sacroiliac pain due to bone or tissue damage or nerve disruption
  • Joint pain of the back, shoulders, arms, hands, legs, knees, or feet
  • Injuries due to overuse or overextension of the joints
  • Rotator cuff injuries and similar injuries
  • Improved healing following surgery or wound care therapy
  • Hip, shoulder, knee, neck, back, and leg pain
  • Many other life-changing applications throughout the body

Why Umbilical Cord Product Seems To Work…For a Very Brief Time

Unethical facilities get away with their claims because sometimes, for a brief time, the unwary patient may feel better due to the growth factors that are in the dead tissue of the umbilical cord product. A growth factor is a naturally occurring substance that can, for a while, stimulate modest cellular growth and temporarily promote healing.

Without live stem cells, however, this effect is short term and far from the “miracle cure” promised by unscrupulous actors. The patient’s pain and symptoms return once the effects of the growth factors wear off.

The Advantages of Adipose-Derived Stem Cells and Bone Marrow-Derived Stem Cells n Regenerative Therapy

Adipose Stem Cells:

The medical term for fat-derived stem cells is adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (A- MSCs). And there’s a reason why the National Stem Cell Institute overwhelmingly uses adipose stem cells in our procedures.

A-MSCs are exceptionally potent. They are found in abundance in the fatty layer that lies just beneath the skin. This rich source of potent stem cells is available for easy harvest from virtually everyone. Like other types of MSCs such as those in bone marrow, adipose-derived MSCs can differentiate into a broad array of cell types that the body needs for repair, regeneration,, and rejuvenation.

Adipose-derived stem cells are so abundant in the fatty layer that far more can be harvested from a small sample of thigh, abdomen, or buttock fat than from any other stem cell source within the body.

Bone Marrow Stem Cells: For patients who, for one reason or another, are not candidates for adipose-derived stem cell therapy, bone marrow stem cell therapy provides a useful alternative. NSI’s advanced technique for harvesting bone marrow stem cells is virtually painless and is done on an outpatient basis.

This means that the need for invasive surgery or extended recovery time after the procedure is eliminated. It also means that the stem cells come directly from the patient receiving therapy. Risk of rejection is as statistically low as it can possibly get. And these are live, thriving stem cells, not the “suicidal” cells of umbilical cord blood and tissue that die within 24 hours.

Additionally, from harvest to therapy, the entire process is fully conducted in-house at NSI, ensuring the strictest controls for safety. The proprietary procedures require only local anesthesia and are performed in a matter of a few hours on an outpatient basis The safe, effective, and ethical stem cell therapies done with A-MSCs at NSI are all fully FDA compliant.

Come to NSI if You Are Unsure

Unscrupulous facilities that tout the use of stem cells harvested from umbilical cord blood and tissue are being shut down daily. If you have been victimized by one of these facilities, please visit one of the National Stem Cell Institute’s locations.

If you still believe that cord blood and tissue product is something to explore, please come to NSI for your procedure to ensure that the product you’ve received is properly handled and safe to administer.

Adipose stem cells are exceptionally potent, far more accessible, easily harvested into a virtually painless outpatient procedure with little to no risk of infection, side effects. or rejection, and capable of addressing an ever-growing list of illnesses, conditions, and injuries.

NSI is always happy to help with any questions you may have about stem cells and how they are changing the face of medicine.
