How the Studies were Conducted

Sergio Baranzini, a human geneticist at the University of California, San Francisco, led the study that evaluated the microbiomes of 71 people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. His team also analyzed a control group of 71 healthy people with no disease of any kind. It was discovered that two particular bacterial groups known as Acinetobacter and Akkermansia were four times more abundant in the MS group than the control group of healthy individuals. Just an interesting was the finding that another bacterial group known as Parabacteroides was four times as abundant in healthy participants.

The research team introduced what are known as naïve immune cells taken from the healthy control group and exposed these cells to the gut bacteria present in the MS group. Depending on the kind of bacterial invader they encounter, naïve immune cells become different types of cells. When the naïve immune cells came in contact with the Acinetobacter and Akkermansia bacteria, the cells morphed into a specific type of T helper cell.

This type of T helper cell induces a healthy inflammatory response.

This healthy inflammatory response helped the immune system destroy foreign body invaders and cells that had become infected. Interestingly enough, the researchers also reported that the Acinetobacter group of bacteria then ramped down the production of the regulator T cells, helping to prevent further overreaction of the immune response. All impressive findings in the search for possible multiple sclerosis cause based on bacteria.

The study was further bolstered when the researchers transferred the gut bacteria from the MS control group to laboratory mice that were predisposed to developing a disease similar to multiple sclerosis. Within 20 days, the lab mice that received the bacteria exhibited severe brain inflammation. When the gut bacteria from healthy donors were transferred to mice, the brain inflammation that occurred was far less.

A related study was performed at the Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology in Martinsried, Germany.

In this study, immunologists Gurumoorthy Krishnamoorthy and Hartmut Wekerle led a team that studied the gut microbiomes of 34 sets of identical twins. In each set of twins, only one sibling had developed multiple sclerosis. The bacteria group Akkermansia –one of the two types of bacterial groups used in the University of California study proved to be slightly but significantly more prevalent in twins diagnosed with MS, compared to their healthy siblings. This further bolstered the evidence of certain bacteria as possible multiple sclerosis causes.

As with the University of California study, the Krishnamoorthy/ Wekerle team of researchers introduced the gut microbes from the twins into mice predisposed to develop a disease akin to multiple sclerosis. And 12 weeks afterward, it was found that 3 times as many mice that received bacteria from the MS siblings developed brain inflammation as those that received bacteria from the healthy twins. Additionally, it seemed that intestinal microbes from the twins with multiple sclerosis also blocked the production of molecules that are known to reduce inflammation.

Of course, much more research is underway to discover core multiple sclerosis causes and triggers.
